In January of 1986, LCDR William (Bill) Squires was the Communications Officer on the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67). He learned that that "Big John" would be conducting a four day "Rest and Relaxation" period in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in March. During this stay and with his Commanding Officers permission he contacted the Yankees organization and requested tickets for the crew of the KENNEDY to a Spring training game and invited the entire Yankees organization for a tour of the ship while it was in Port Everglades.

During the course of the game Bill asked Mr. George M. Steinbrenner III who was the owner of the Yankees how would one get into the baseball business. Mr. Steinbrenner didn't hesitate and offered Bill a job to work for the New York Yankees. Bill was planning on making the Navy a career, but his lifelong dream of working in sports and working for the Yankees was just too good to be true so he accepted the offer. His naval career did not end since he participated in the Naval Reserves from 1987 - 2002. He continues to serve his country by working with the Naval Academy Admissions Office in looking for and working with talented young men and women who want to serve their country in either the United States Navy or the United States Marine Corps.
